About The Scale Up Factory

Who This Is For

Having worked inside countless businesses, I’ve noticed that while the products differ, the headaches are identical. Founders face the same operational friction and the same cultural growing pains.

Yet, there is a scarcity of content for this specific stage. There is plenty of advice on how to start a business, and plenty on how to manage a blue-chip corporation, but very little for the Founder or CEO navigating the messy middle.

The Scale Up Factory is here to fill that void. If you are emerging from the start-up phase, looking for a roadmap to structure, or seeking thoughts on how to mature your operations without losing your soul, this is for you.

Turning the "Golden Egg" into a Sustainable Business

There is something special about start-ups. The late nights, the pivot, the hunt for product-market fit—the search for the “golden egg.” But The Scale Up Factory was not built for that phase.

I have never been one to take a punt on a start-up and hope for the best. My fascination lies in the next chapter. I want to work with the companies that have already hatched the egg but are suddenly realising they aren’t quite sure how to raise the chick.

If you have proven your business model and are now staring down the barrel of rapid growth, The Scale Up Factory is where you need to be.

The Philosophy: Why an "Engine"?

Every vehicle needs an engine to move forward, but not every engine is built for the same journey. You wouldn’t put a lawnmower engine in a Formula 1 car and expect to win the race, nor would you put a jet engine in a family saloon and expect a smooth school run.

Scale-up businesses are no different. As your company evolves, the power unit driving it forward needs to adapt. Sometimes, the engine that got you out of the start-up phase is simply too small to handle the load of rapid expansion. In those moments, you might need a complete retrofit—swapping out the old block for something with more torque and stamina.

Other times, the engine is fundamentally sound, but it’s misfiring. It doesn’t need replacing; it needs fine-tuning, better fuel, or a re-calibration of the timing belt to ensure all the moving parts are working in harmony.

The difference between a successful exit and a breakdown on the side of the road usually comes down to whether you have the right engine for the terrain you are navigating, and whether you are maintaining it correctly. The Scale Up Factory is here to help you manage these challenges.

Building with the Exit in Mind

An “exit” isn’t just the final sale of the company; it is a mindset that must be applied to every stage of your growth cycle.

Scale-up journeys are rarely linear; they consist of micro-stages, often punctuated by funding rounds. Whether you are preparing for Series A investment or a final trade sale, the scrutiny you face is identical.

Too many founders scramble to retro-fit governance and operational rigour only when a term sheet is on the table. My approach is different. We build the engine so that it is continuously ready for due diligence. By treating every funding milestone as a mini-exit, we ensure that when capital is needed to fuel the next stage of growth, the business is structurally ready to receive it.

The Background

My perspective is born from 20 years of operating at the intersection of finance and operations. I have worked within large corporates managing internal “mini-businesses” and alongside founders in privately owned scale-ups. My experience spans media (digital, print, radio, TV), FMCG, hospitality, leisure, and the education sector.

In every business I have joined, I entered the building as a Finance Director or CFO. Yet, in every single instance, the role rapidly morphed into operations. Why? Because in a scale-up, there is almost always a gap between the financial ambition and the operational reality.

I have seen the failures. I have seen the cultural missteps and the operational bottlenecks. But ultimately, I have seen significant growth. Every business I have been involved with has led to a successful exit or a major fundraise. I know what the finish line looks like, and I know how to reverse-engineer the path to get there – hopefully The Scale Up Factory will help share some of that knowledge with you.
