I have never been one to take a punt on a start-up and hope for the best. My fascination lies in the next chapter. I want to work with the companies that have already hatched the egg but are suddenly realising they aren’t quite sure how to raise the chick.

The Philosophy: Why a "Factory"?

Every business needs an operational structure to move forward, but not every structure is built for the same level of output. You wouldn’t use a garden shed to manufacture commercial aircraft, nor would you build a multi-acre facility to craft bespoke, one-off items. Scale-up businesses are no different. As your company evolves, the operational architecture driving it forward needs to adapt.

Sometimes, the scrappy processes that got you out of the start-up phase are simply too fragile to handle the load of rapid expansion. In those moments, you might need a complete operational overhaul – swapping out the old floor plan for something designed for mass production and sustainability. Other times, the core structure is fundamentally sound, but there are bottlenecks. The processes don’t need rebuilding; they need system optimisation, better data inputs, or a recalibration of the management team to ensure all departments are working in harmony.

An “exit” isn’t just the final sale of the company; it is a mindset that must be applied to every stage of your growth cycle.

Scale-up journeys are rarely linear; they consist of micro-stages, often punctuated by funding rounds. Whether you are preparing for Series A investment or a final trade sale, the scrutiny you face is identical.

Too many founders scramble to retro-fit governance and operational rigour only when a term sheet is on the table. My approach is different. We operate in a manner so that the business is continuously ready for due diligence. By treating every funding milestone as a mini-exit, we ensure that when capital is needed to fuel the next stage of growth, the business is structurally ready to receive it.

The Background

My perspective is born from 20 years of operating at the intersection of finance and operations. I have worked within large corporates managing internal “mini-businesses” and alongside founders in privately owned scale-ups. My experience spans media (digital, print, radio, TV), FMCG, hospitality, leisure, and the education sector.

In every business I have joined, I entered the building as a Finance Director or CFO. Yet, in every single instance, the role rapidly morphed into operations. Why? Because in a scale-up, there is almost always a gap between the financial ambition and the operational reality.  I have seen the failures. I have seen the cultural missteps and the operational bottlenecks. But ultimately, I have seen significant growth.

Every business I have been involved with has led to a successful exit or a major fundraise. I know what a mature, highly valuable business looks like, and I know how to reverse-engineer the blueprint to get there – hopefully The Scale Up Factory will help share some of that knowledge with you.
